Open Day and June Pilot

We had our first open day in the lab on Sat 31st March. Applicants to the New Media Degrees (BSc (Hons) Multimedia Design Technology and BA (Hons) Interactive Media Design) were introduced to Morae and our EEG set up. One exercise included using brain power to raise an animated ball in the air. This image shows the brainwave analyzer.

Our next step is to run a series of pilot studies. The first beginning in June will investigate claims made in Don Norman’s book Emotional Design and generally investigate the notion of neuro-usability. I'll post more on that soon, but we are working with a major UX company and recruiting students from UEL to help us test.

Lab set up

Thanks to Stuart for helping to set up this week. We now have Morae set up in the lab ready to use. We also had Neurosky up and running ;-). Some problems with eye tracker. More soon.

Images for the lab space

Spent last week painting the lab. We have decided to decorate it using these six faces - based on Ekman's affect program studies (see below). Would welcome any comments via Twitter.

Also had first meeting with major London based UX company about running some pilot UX projects through the lab as early as next semester. More to follow on this exciting development.

Theory Objectives

One of the clear objectives of the lab is to draw on a wide range of reading materials to inform new methods and ideas about how to do UX research. To this extent I have been reviewing a number of books on emotion from various disciplines. Here is a list - more comments to follow.

Cognition and Emotion: Reviews of Current Research and Theories, edited by De Houwer and Hermans, Psychology Press (2010).

Stoicism and Emotion, Graver, Chicago Press (2007).

Metaphors We Live By, Lakoff and Johnson, Chicago Press (1980, 2003).

Echo Objects: The Cognitive Work of Images, Stafford, Chicago Press (2007).

And oh yes and we are painting the lab this week ;-)

Reading One

Some of the reading informing ideas here at emotionUXD

Zajonc, R. B., Feeling and Thinking: Preferences Need No Inferences. American Psychologist, 1980, 35, 151-175.

--- Some key points made here by an important, but now dead social psychologist. For example, "Contemporary psychology sees feelings as after cognition. Before one can like something they must be aware of it and have assessed some critical attributes."

"Yet feelings are a primary variable in interactions of people. The social interpretation of affect is as much non-verbal than verbal. People can differentiate the tone of voice much more reliably than the content (or even the language used!)."

"It seems that pictures are recognized faster than words, maybe because they elict affect faster than abstractions like words do."

Automatic Attention to Emotional Stimuli:
Neural Correlates
by Luis Carretie, Jose´ A. Hinojosa, Manuel Martı´n-Loeches,
Francisco Mercado, and Manuel Tapia1. Human Brain Mapping 22:290 –299(2004)

---- Nice eeg results produced here. But what is more interesting for the emotionUXD project is the claim to be able to capture automatic attention, particularly through the use of negative imagery. The implications of this type of research for political campaigning are very interesting. Consider for example GW Bush's use of 9/11 imagery in his 2004 ad campaign.

We have a space for our lab!

Good news!!! After a rather long wait we are finally moving into a room based at the Docklands campus in East London. Once the room is cleared we'll be able to set up our kit and get the students started on some pilot projects for next semester.

This blog will chart our progress from decorating (next week) through to the set up and beyond.

The emotionUXD (User Experience Design) lab is the result of a successful bid for funds to research user experiences and usage from the perspective of emotions, affects and feelings. Our intention is to combine affordable new technologies (eye trackers, eeg and observation software) with conceptual testing and prototyping to develop new UX methods.

Alongside other less ambitious projects the lab will investigate the relation established between a user’s attention and their emotions. It will also approach UXD from the idea that feelings might have thoughts of their own (Zajonc). The project sets out to test assumptions made in emotional design literature (Norman, 2004). The lab work will be applied to at range of user experiences from interactions with political websites to more mundane everyday media usage.
